What are the possible side effects of ZAVESCA?

ZAVESCA may cause serious side effects, including:

Numbness, tingling, pain, or burning in the hands or feet (peripheral neuropathy). If you feel numbness, tingling, pain or burning in your hands and feet, call your healthcare provider immediately.

Before you start ZAVESCA and during ZAVESCA treatment, your healthcare provider may test your nerves (neurological examination).

New or worsening hand tremor (shaking). Tremors are common in ZAVESCA and may begin within the first month of starting treatment. Sometimes, if treatment is continued, the tremor may disappear within 1 to 3 months. If you experience new or worsening hand tremors, your healthcare provider may lower your dose or stop ZAVESCA. Diarrhea is common in ZAVESCA and can sometimes be severe. If you experience problems, your healthcare provider may prescribe another medicine (antidiarrheal medicine) to treat diarrhea and may recommend changes to your eating habits, such as avoiding high-carbohydrate foods. If you have diarrhea, talk to your healthcare provider about diet.

Weight loss is common in ZAVESCA and can sometimes be serious. When you start treatment with ZAVESCA, you may lose weight.

Low platelet counts are common in ZAVESCA and can be serious. Your healthcare provider may perform blood tests during ZAVESCA treatment to monitor your platelet count.

The most common side effects of ZAVESCA include:

Zavesca is an N-alkylated imino sugar, which is a synthetic analog of D-glucose.

The chemical name of miglustat is 1,5-(butylimino)-1,5-dideoxy-D-glucitol, the chemical formula is C10H21NO4, and the molecular weight is 219.28.
